Summer birds of the Hamptons
It was hotter than hot, but a delight to be on the beach where Georgica Pond comes out to meet the ocean. An area is cordoned off for nesting Least Terns, of which there were about 40, and Piping Plovers, of which I counted 10, but then they were scurrying everywhere so not precisely sure of how many. Also found at that end of the pond were Double-crested Cormorants, Great Black Backed Gulls, Semipalmated Plovers, Common Terns, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, a Spotted Sandpiper, and some peeps -- maybe Semipalmated Sandpipers? Down at the waves were Sanderlings. Flyovers included Purple Martins, Osprey, Yellow Warbler, Barn Swallows.
